Real-Time Transport Decision Lab

Compare Polling, Long Polling, SSE, WebSocket and WebTransport against your communication and infrastructure needs.

EngineeringBackendFrontendAPIPerformancePlanning
🔒Your tool inputs are processed in your browser and are not uploaded or sent to analytics.

Which transport fits your live updates? Describe the communication first. Compare five patterns without opening a connection or testing a server.

Reliability, infrastructure and browser needs

Selected values remain active when this section is closed. Review recovery, compatibility and protocol needs before adopting the result.

Scale assumptions

Per-user averages, not capacity predictions. Every connected user is assumed to receive the entered event rate.

What this model does not guarantee · sources

Editorial architecture guidance, not a live benchmark. No pattern alone supplies authentication, durable replay, exactly-once effects or application recovery. SSE carries text; ordinary HTTP requests can handle separate client writes. Reliable stream delivery is distinct from retaining events after a disconnect. Browser support and intermediary behavior must be verified for your exact targets.

This lab models WebTransport over verified HTTP/3. Reliable-only HTTP/2 variants are outside its scope. It recommends datagrams only as an explicit capability, with reliability/order conflicts called out. It never assumes a newer protocol is better.

Technical references: MDN: SSE · MDN: WebSocket · MDN: WebTransport. Scoring weights are editorial decisions, not standards.

What this tool does and why

Before you start

What

Compare Polling, Long Polling, SSE, WebSocket and WebTransport against your communication and infrastructure needs.

Why

The wrong transport can add needless requests, latency or lifecycle complexity. Direction, recovery and infrastructure matter more than choosing the newest protocol.

Your Result and Action update in the tool as you change its inputs.

Model note

This browser-side model explains the inputs you choose. Check an important decision against the real system, brief, or production constraints.

Next

Use the result to choose a connected next move.

How this tool stays honest

How it works

Choose direction, freshness, data, reliability, browser and backend requirements. Inspect deterministic weighted fits, capability constraints, trade-offs and switch triggers across five browser transport patterns. Compare workload assumptions without opening a connection or claiming measured performance.

Assumptions

The tool runs in your browser and models the information you provide. It does not know facts outside that model.

Limitations

Weighted editorial fit, not statistical confidence, a benchmark or a capacity guarantee. Replay and recovery require application design. WebTransport is scoped to a verified HTTP/3 path; exact browser support and proxies need separate checks. No connection is created.

Understand Real-Time Transport Decision Lab

What this tool helps you understand

Choose direction, freshness, data, reliability, browser and backend requirements. Inspect deterministic weighted fits, capability constraints, trade-offs and switch triggers across five browser transport patterns. Compare workload assumptions without opening a connection or claiming measured performance.

When to use it

Before choosing a live-update transport for a browser feature.

Try a scenario

Start with a one-way notification feed, then change to frequent two-way messages. Inspect why WebSocket becomes more competitive than SSE, and verify replay separately.

How to read the result

Read eligibility and conflicting requirements before percentages. Compare the leading option with the runner-up, inspect scoring weights and use requirement-change triggers to revisit the decision.

Assumptions and limits

Weighted editorial fit, not statistical confidence, a benchmark or a capacity guarantee. Replay and recovery require application design. WebTransport is scoped to a verified HTTP/3 path; exact browser support and proxies need separate checks. No connection is created.
